Good to Know: What are Brands?

    • Share: A brand is a recognizable symbol, mark, logo, name, word, phrase, or a combination of these items that companies use to identify and distinguish themselves from other companies (Merriam-Webster, n.d.). Each of us also has a personal “brand.”
    • Instruction: On the board, post 3-5 facts about a famous person (without naming that person). Have participants read the facts and make guesses before revealing who it is. Examples include:
      • Beyoncé
        • The most Grammy-nominated woman in history
        • Was a lead vocalist of a popular R&B group before her solo career
        • Listed as the most powerful female in the entertainment of 2015 and 2017 by Forbes

    • Share: Like how each of these people’s decisions makes up their “brand,” your choices and actions also make up your “brand” along with other aspects of your life, such as your relationships with others and your hobbies. A brand can be “positive” or “negative” depending on YOU.

Real World Relevance: Create the Brand of You

    • Instruction: Have participants create their own vision board of what makes them who they are accomplishments, strengths, favorites, hobbies, pictures of them with friends/family, etc.). Provide flashcards, small cork-board panels or poster boards, magazines, markers, and paper/scrapbook paper so that they can design their boards however they would like. You can even encourage them to include their own pictures. Participants could also write down qualities that make them who they are. After 15-25 minutes, have everyone share one thing on their board.
      • Optional: Play music as participants complete their boards.
    • Share: We are not who the world says we are. We have the power to create our own positive image and not fall down to what others say we are. As an author, Tom Peter’s put it: “It’s this simple: You are a Brand. You are in charge of your brand. There is no single path to success. And there is no one right way to create the Brand called YOU.” Let’s start today to maintain and improve our brands!
