Technically Speaking...

  • So, now you are probably ready to talk about democracy, and if someone asked you, "What kind of government does the United States have?"  You might immediately answer, "Democracy."

    Technically, you'd be wrong.

    Democratic elections are a strong part of our society.  We are technically a constitution-based federal republic with a strong democratic tradition.  But that's a mouthful. 

    Basically...

    The Constitution is the law of the Union and details the powers of the federal government.

    Federal is the states being united by a (federal) government.

    Republic means we don't have a king/ queen, but leaders who are elected by the people.
