    Unit 2

    Week 4

    Day 7

    Q2.1 – Q2.5 Exploring the difference between heat and temperature

      4 blocks (aluminum, steel, wood, paper pad or Styrofoam), or kitchen items made of these materials;
    Regular bulb and tube liquid thermometer that reads between 0 and 100 degrees C
    U2H2. Diagnostic Question about Temperature

    Begin Day 7,

    Q2.6 – Q2.18 Exploring energy transfer in the context of mixing hot and cold water

    If in a room without a sink:

    Big pot with cold water from tap

    Big pot with hot water from tap or on hot plate

    Dippers,

    hot pot holder

    Big bucket for waste water

    Qualitative exploration:

    2 digital temperature probes and related software (We use vernier.com probes and Logger lite software) or 2 bulb and tube thermometers);

    cup for hot water (ceramic or Styrofoam),

    Plastic cup for cold water,

    1 clear plastic cup marked with 1,2,3,4 equal divisions,

    2 quart containers for hot and cold water,

    2 trays.

    (laptop computer, perhaps brought to class by group member if using digital temperature probes)

    U2H1 Exit Ticket

    U2H3 Table.II.1

    Day 8

    Continue exploration of thermal phenomena

    (Additional time would be helpful for students needing to build skill with algebra)

    Question 2.16 NGSS crosscutting concepts used in Units 1 & 2

    Same equipment as Day 7 Quantitative Exploration:

    Same equipment as Day 7

    (Group creates Table II.2)

    U2H1 Exit ticket

    U2H5 Graph Templates

    U2H6 Table II.1 continued)

    U2H7 Table.II.3

    U2H8 Solving Thermal Math Problems

    U2H9 NGSS Crosscutting Concepts
