World War I ended in 1918. There are no World War I veterans still alive. One group of veterans you will see honored are the World War II veterans. Over 16 million Americans served in World War II. More than 400,000 died in the war and several million were wounded.

Today, the average age of World War II veterans is over 85; more than 1000 pass away every day.

I find it very touching when an older veteran is given a letter of thanks and appreciation written by a young student. Veterans Day is a very meaningful day for these special men and women because it brings back many difficult memories. The veterans are symbolic of the connection between the past, the present, and the future and reinforce the veterans’ special sense of pride and patriotism.

These heroes went to war to defend our way of life in the USA.

They helped to give us the quality of life that we enjoy today.

We need letter writers who can share sincere thoughts of thanks and admiration for their sacrifices. These letters can become something that they will treasure for the rest of their lives.
