The Vowel <a>
The sound the <a> spells in at is called short <a>, and is written [a].
The sound the <a> spells in ate is called long <a>, and is written [ā].
Examples
Note whether each letter <a> makes a short <a> or [a] sound versus a long <a> or [ā] sound.
