On November 11, 1921, an unknown World War I American soldier was buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.  Similar ceremonies occurred in England and France.  This was to celebrate the ending of World War I where the fighting ended at 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918 (that was the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month).  This day became known as "Armistice Day" (the word armistice means truce, as in stopping fighting in war).

Armistice Day honored veterans of World War I, which was known as "The war to end all wars."  Then World War II happened.  It was another horrific war (over 407,000 Americans died).

Armistice Day unofficially became "Veterans Day" in 1947 to honor all American service personnel.  In 1954, Congress passed a bill to name November 11th Veterans Day to honor ALL veterans.
