If you go to the grocery store tomorrow, you may be handed a small red flower by a veteran. But, what is the significance of that little flower?
Those flowers are poppies. Poppies have been conected to Veterans Day since 1919. The poppies are a symbol for remembering veterans as a result of a poem by a Canadian military doctor. The poem called, "In Flanders Fields," is based on the poppies that bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders, Belgium in World War I. The poem is below.
